Beginner’s Guide to Embroidery: Part 1

How to prepare your fabric, hoop, and headspace for your first stitches.

The Calm Before the Stitch

Welcome to the first part of our Beginner's Guide to Embroidery — we're so happy you're here. Before you make your first stitch, let's slow down and set the scene. Good embroidery starts with a great setup.

Getting your hoop ready is a mindful moment — take your time.

🧺 What You’ll Need

  • A 6\" bamboo embroidery hoop
  • Pre-printed cotton fabric (like the ones in our kits)
  • Embroidery thread (floss), a needle, and scissors
  • A table or lap tray with good lighting
  • A cuppa, if you’re so inclined ☕️

🔁 How to Set Up Your Hoop

Think of this step like tuning an instrument — you want tension without stress. Your fabric should feel smooth and even, like the top of a drum. Here’s how:

  1. Loosen the screw at the top of your hoop and separate the two rings.
  2. Place your fabric over the smaller inner ring, centered on the design.
  3. Gently press the larger outer ring down over the top.
  4. Tighten the screw just enough to hold the fabric, then pull gently at the edges to make it taut.
Pro Tip: Center your design before tightening. Adjust as needed until it looks just right — embroidery is all about small adjustments!

🎵 Why This Part Matters

Starting with a smooth, stable fabric gives your stitches a solid foundation. It also sets the tone: embroidery is about slowing down, finding your rhythm, and creating something beautiful — one thread at a time.
